Graduation/Christmas Break!

Here I am, new to blogging. (Actually, new to the idea of using blog as a verb, to be frank) I thought I would give it a try--now that we've had graduation: papers are evaluated; scores are calculated; grades are submitted. It's time for a change. So, I'll give this blog idea a try. (Look--blog as an adjective) Many, many of my students record most (if not all) of their feelings on the Internet in their blogs (now as a noun); in fact, some of them direct me to their blogs (even when they've used their blog as a place to vent their frustration with school--or even with my class specifically). It seems incredibly odd to me.

Well, let's leave it at that. I'll try again later. We'll see if I keep it up.

Ms. Thompson! Thanks for commenting on my blog. Matt says hello and got a hearty chuckle from your post about the multitude of uses for the word blog. :) How language does evolve (or devolve)!

Where are you teaching now? Your profile says "Travelers Rest" - is that the name of a city or ministry of some sort?

Wow, it was so neat to see your name on my blog! I will keep checking in here to see your progression or digression into the blogging world :-)

Again welcome to the blogosphere! Regarding "blogging" regardless of grammar, in the field of linguistics, function trumps form everytime!

Miss Thompson! Wow, thanks for the comment on my blog. Great blog of your own. Do I remember you?!?! I think of you quite often - just the other day I was telling some story about freshman English, and you were right there in the midst of that memory. Brian Modaff and I begged you to let us into your already full 2nd semester freshman English class because of "work conflicts" - then he and I competed the whole semester and I ended up with a 99% in the class (I think he had a 98% or something - I beat him, whatever it was). I learned so much - and had a blast. And the journals from 1st semester freshman English - you're the reason we're all blogging! Don't grade our grammar - although, I would like to think I really did learn something back then and am still practicing it 11 years later (yeah, it's been that long!).

I knew you were back in the SC area, but I wasn't sure what you were up to. Quite a bit it sounds like. Are you anywhere near Greg & Rena Stiekes?

Again thanks for the comment - welcome to the blog world. I'll send you an email too so you have my email address. If you're ever in the San Fransisco area, look us up!

Wahoo! Miss Thompson's joined the blogosphere.

I'm amazed at the number of Northland people who are just waiting for us to find them on the internet "which can be used for good and bad purposes".

Awww. I've missed you, Miss Thompson.

P.S. I debated for several minutes about the placement of that last quotation mark. If I chose incorrectly it's because both copies of Troika are inaccessibly located in the room of a sleeping toddler. My apologies. :)
P.P.S. It's so cool to hear from you!

Sarah, How in the world do you remember my remark, "The Internet can be used for good and bad purposes"? Ha! I must have said that, though, 1786 times. Hmm. That's hysterical. I laughed aloud when I read that. (And I could actually hear myself saying it. That was kind of creepy.) (Oh, the period does go inside the quotation mark. It's okay. My current students tell me that grammar/proofreading/punct. rules/etc. don't count on the Internet. Sometimes, they don't even have their fingers on the "home keys" when they type an email to me.) I'm so glad to be in touch with you and your family. For that reason, I LOVE the Internet--rules or not!

Welcome to blogging Miss Thompson! I guess I can't really welcome you, since I'm not a real blogger. I'm waiting until I've graduated from grad school to start a blog. When I will have "so much time" teaching while in China. You are right, that blogging is such a great way to keep up with friends. Have a wonderful Christmas!
